- Wiltshire Council overwhelmingly rejects motion to withdraw the local authority from a national initiative to tackle climate change, September 16 [2] Result of the vote: 85 councillors reiterated support for action on climate change, compared to only 6 who wanted the council to withdraw. The councillors were calling for Wiltshire Council to remove itself from the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change arguing against "a widely disputed theory that industrial mankind causes global warming." Over 300 councils have so far signed the Declaration which commits councils and their partners to systematically address the causes of climate change and to prepare their community for its impacts. - Redcliffe Carbon Challenge, Bristol: a local school will become a low-carbon community hub.
- Transition Together, Totnes: Expansion of the successful scheme to promote low-carbon lifestyles within local communities.
- Sidmouth Carbon Challenge, Devon: a project based at the local school, with students acting as low-carbon leaders in the community.
- Marlborough Climate Pledge, Wiltshire: Local householders join together and pledge to take action on climate change.
- River Power Millers, Mendip, Somerset: installs micro-hydroelectric turbines in disused water mills, providing clean, local energy.

- Somerset County Council vote to endorse a motion that they become the UK’s first ‘Transition Local Authority’, July 28 [7] Last week, Somerset County Council voted unanimously to endorse a motion that they become the UK’s first ‘Transition Local Authority’. What it means is that SCC could start taking an integrated approach to its planning processes, putting peak oil and climate change at the heart of its forward planning. It may well also unlock funds for the many Transition initiatives emerging across Somerset. topic

- 60sq mile exclusion zone in Lyme Bay - the first of its kind on this scale in the UK – announced today by Defra, June 19 [10] Lyme Bay is home to around 300 recorded species of plants and animals, including dense populations of the nationally protected pink seafan and the extremely rare sunset coral. As well as a haven for sponges, starfish and coral, the reefs also support a range of seafood animals, including crab, lobster and scallops. [11] topic
