[Frame12] Unemployment rates in the MAP area are low compared with both District and UK levels for men and women. However proportionally more JSA claimants are young people.

Unemployment rates are proportionally higher in East Malling, mainly accounted for by slightly higher male unemployment, featuring longer term unemployed.

Q 8. Has unemployment fallen or risen in the last 5 years, compared to the national average?

Unemployment is lower than the national average: In the MAP area unemployment has dropped from 1% to 0.86% from January 2007 to January 2008. The District level has dropped from 1.2% to 0.9% and the UK level from 2.6% to 2.2%.

There are no specific trends in unemployment – as large forms move onto the Kings Hill Development there are trends for increasing employment in a range of sectors.
