There are 1715 under 5’s in the MAP area:

There are 28 registered childminders

11 Preschool playgroups/toddler groups

These provide 488 nursery and preschool places

Additionally there is a total 73 childcare providers (including holiday and after school play schemes) within 5 miles of West Malling Town Centre

Q 2 Is there access to good quality schools in the area?

Compare rankings in school league tables with other, similar towns.

There 10 Primary schools in the area. School test results are mainly above average.

There are 4 secondary schools within 3 miles of the centre of West Malling: The Grange is a special school, The Malling School, Holmesdale Technology College and Aylesford Sports College have results below the national average for achievement of 5 GCSE passes at grades A*-C and AS/A Level average scores. The schools are rated as similar to other schools of the same type in Kent and all are improving. Kent is a selective school area most academically able children attend a range of grammar schools. The most popular of these are Maidstone Girls and Boys Grammar Schools, Oakwood Park and Invicta. These are all much larger schools than the local ones, but all are within 6 miles of the town and have very good GCSE and A level results – much higher than the KCC and UK averages. Q 4 Are there a high number of school exclusions?

Behaviour and extent of exclusions are rated as satisfactory or good. The Malling School had a higher than average level of exclusions but this was noted as greatly improved in the 2006 Ofsted Report Ofsted 2006, 2008

Q 5 Does the area attract and retain enough graduates?

If no, are there any policies in place/being planned to address this problem?

Across Kent there is a concern that the not enough graduates remain in the area. The level of employees with higher level qualifications is lower than the average at 17.3% (T&M 18.1%, UK 20.4%)
