Copy of posting to the UK Local Sustainability email list (localsustuk) in response to an email from Chris Church of London 21 Sustainability Network

"I wouldn't hold your breath on this one." Yes, afraid so. Thanks to Jamie's email I found my way to reading the Research Paper / report on the Bill's Committees stage and it seemed like virtually none of the important lessons had been learned from LA21 - maybe unsurprising when there seemed very little interest in talking to those who'd been directly involved.

And yet, is there a way to move forward? Now that its there will government tend to rely on it, at the expense of seriously considering better alternatives or improvements? The central question which seems to recur is how to get government to get real on genuine community involvement.

Communities and Local Government have recently launched "An Action Plan for Community Empowerment", and have asked for comments by 19 January 2008. If there is such a thing as a set of people who long for something better on local sustainability, is there any way we could summon up the will power to try and collectively influence this?
