Clean Heat goes door-to-door

A loan to help Christchurch households upgrade to cleaner heating appliances and insulation is being marketed door-to-door in a pilot programme for Environment Canterbury’s Clean Heat Project.

Environment Canterbury’s chairman Sir Kerry Burke said that the loan will be marketed door-to-door in two trial suburbs over the next two weeks. The aim is to register households with an open fire or solid fuel burner to the Clean Heat Project.

Councillors approved the loan programme last month and will enable Clean Heat participants to fund their replacement heater and insulation. The loan principal is repaid over 10 years through a targeted rate on the householder’s property. Sir Kerry says the loan is a significant addition help Christchurch meet the National Air Standard by 2013.

The Clean Heat Project was launched in 2003 and has around 12,600 households registered - nearly 30 per cent of the 46,000 Christchurch households estimated to have been burning solid fuel for home heating in 2002.
